Quinta de Santa Cristina Alvarinho Grande Reserva 2020

[dropcap]Q[/dropcap]uinta de Santa Cristina is nestled in the Basto sub-region, within the DOC Vinho Verde appellation — a singular territory framed by the Marão, Alvão, Fafe and Cabreira mountain ranges, fed by the right bank of the Tâmega river. A landscape of striking beauty that leaves a deep imprint on the character of its wines.

The estate is located in Celorico de Basto, a municipality in the Braga district, and its winery, built in 2012, has an installed capacity of one million litres, though current production stands at around 500,000 litres. The entire winemaking process takes place on site, from pressing to bottling, combining artisanal craftsmanship with contemporary methodology.

The parent company, Garantia das Quintas, positions its vineyards on the most privileged soils and aspects in the area, with the aim of crafting harmonious, distinctive and modern wines capable of delivering genuine pleasure to those who drink them.

The range of cultivated varietals is broad: whites including Arinto, Avesso, Azal, Loureiro and Trajadura, with Alvarinho as the undisputed flagship. For reds, native varieties such as Borraçal, Brancelho, Espadeiro and Vinhão yield wines of deep colour, freshness and aromas of wild berries and spice.

The current commercial vintage is 2020, available in four formats: 0.75 L, 1.5 L (Magnum), 3 L and 5 L.

Appellation: IG Minho · Vintage: 2020 · Varietal: 100% Alvarinho · Winemaker: Jorge Sousa Pinto · Alcohol: 14% vol. · Serving temperature: 10–12 °C · Retail price (0.75 L): €26.50

Winemaking: For this wine, a rigorous selection of the finest Alvarinho grapes was carried out. After extensive tastings and deliberation among the winemaking team, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with temperature control. Once complete, and after a brief resting period in tank, the wine was transferred to second-use French oak barrels for seven months, with active batonnage during the first thirty days. Both bottling and labelling were carried out by hand, with the utmost care and precision.

The choice of large-format bottles is deliberate: the Magnum format ensures a slower, more controlled evolution, preserving the wine’s freshness and complexity over a longer period of time.

Sensory Tasting Notes

SIGHT The wine displays brilliant clarity, with a golden-yellow hue and greenish glints that speak to its vitality. The depth of colour already hints at the ripeness of the grape and its time in oak, yet without losing the youthful character so typical of Atlantic Alvarinho.

NOSE The first aromatic impression is immediate and striking: vivid notes of orange and mandarin trace a bridge between crisp citrus fruit and sun-kissed ripeness. A very subtle toasted nuance quickly emerges — the legacy of French oak — acting as an elegant counterpoint without ever masking the fruit. Beneath all this, white floral notes — orange blossom, magnolia — a delicate mineral undercurrent reminiscent of wet stone, and, as the wine opens in the glass, suggestions of ripe stone fruit: white peach, apricot, even a whisper of quince paste. The integration between varietal expression and barrel ageing is exceptional.

PALATE The entry is broad and creamy, with a full body that surprises with its volume without ever feeling heavy. The silky texture envelops the palate with an almost tactile sensation. The citric acidity — very restrained and subtle — provides the structure needed to keep the wine alive and taut. The alcohol, at 14%, integrates seamlessly. The finish is persistent, clean and refined, with a lingering fruity echo and a faint mineral note that draws you back for another sip. Full varietal ripeness without sacrificing freshness or acidity: an imposing structure.

A world-class white wine — complex, elegant and sophisticated — that suits a wide range of occasions. It has the depth to evolve positively in bottle for a further three to five years, gaining additional complexity and tertiary nuances.
