Protos Gran Reserva 2006

Protos Gran Reserva 2006 is a red wine from the D.O. Ribera del Duero, produced from 100% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) grapes sourced from old vines on Bodegas Protos’ own estate in Peñafiel. Aged for 26 months in French and American oak barrels, followed by a minimum of 36 months of bottle ageing before release. Tasted in 2026, with 20 years of evolution behind it, making this a truly singular tasting experience.

Tasting

Visual phase

Time has done its work with elegance. The glass shows a garnet colour of medium-low depth, with a rim that has clearly evolved towards brick and orange tones, characteristic of a wine in full maturity. Far from the opaque intensity of its youth, it now presents a notable transparency that allows the bottom of the glass to show through. Clean and bright, with a dense, slow-moving leg that speaks of a wine with body still very much present.

Nose

The nose is the most revealing point of this tasting. Twenty years on, the primary fruit has yielded almost all of the stage to a tertiary complexity of great depth. In the foreground appear aromas of cured leather, Havana tobacco, cigar box, black truffle and woodland mushrooms. Behind them, a second layer of dried and candied fruit: prunes, dried figs, hints of very ripe blackberry jam. The oak, perfectly integrated after two decades, contributes memories of aged vanilla, cedar, bitter cocoa and sweet spices such as cinnamon and clove. A touch of old leather and damp earth rounds off a whole of great complexity and nobility. Intensity is medium-high, with a slow and harmonious evolution in the glass that invites you to take all the time you need.

Palate

The entry on the palate confirms that this wine has reached its peak and is traversing it with dignity. The attack is soft and silky, with an acidity that is still present and structural — the very quality that has allowed this remarkably successful evolution. The tannins, once powerful and firm, now appear completely integrated, velvety, almost imperceptible as such, woven into a texture that recalls aged silk. The body is medium, more refined than in its youth, but with a presence and volume that fill the mouth with elegance. The flavour travels across the palate with notes of tobacco, leather, dried fruit, black liquorice and a very characteristic mineral, earthy finish typical of Ribera del Duero soils. The aftertaste is long and persistent, with a warm, spiced and slightly balsamic finish that lingers for several minutes. Extraordinary persistence.

A reflection on the drinking window

Twenty years is a significant age for any wine, and this Protos Gran Reserva 2006 carries it with an elegance that speaks very highly of both the vintage — considered excellent in Ribera del Duero — and the work done in the cellar. It is at an optimal drinking moment, perhaps already at its peak or beginning to descend gently. There is no urgency, but there is equally no reason to delay opening it much further. Anyone with bottles in the cellar should uncork them within the next two or three years to enjoy it at its very best.

Conclusion

A Gran Reserva that has aged with nobility and that shows the very best of Ribera del Duero when approached with both skill and patience. The Tempranillo from Peñafiel, the clay-limestone soils of the area and a careful ageing process have produced a wine of character, complexity and memory. This is not a wine for any occasion: it is a wine for a special moment, to be paired with a fine roast suckling lamb or a braised game dish, and to be drunk slowly, attentively and with due respect for the time it has spent in bottle.

It deserves a rating of Excellent, with a score of 93 points.
