As I reflect on that journey, it’s clear that it was an experience that awakened all my senses and left an unforgettable taste in my mouth. If you’re a lover of wine and the good life, prepare to take notes, because we’re looking at what is probably the most fascinating wine route in France.

It all begins in Bordeaux, the jewel in the crown. Strolling through its streets, with the Garonne reflecting the elegance of its buildings, is a pleasure in itself. But the best was yet to come: the wineries. Visiting Château Margaux, a classic, leaves you speechless with the majesty of its vineyards and the exquisiteness of its wines. Then, we entered Saint-Émilion, a dreamy medieval village, where every corner breathes history and wine tradition. There, the Château Ausone winery captivates with its legendary wines.

Saint Emilion

But the route doesn’t stop in Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion. There’s much more to discover. In Médoc, the D2, the road of the castles, takes you through a parade of impressive wineries, such as Château Lafite Rothschild or Château Latour. In Graves, don’t miss Château Haut-Brion, one of the five Premier Cru Classé. And in Sauternes, prepare for the nectar of the gods: sweet wine.

Between tastings, it is essential to enjoy the local gastronomy. In Bordeaux, try the fresh oysters from the Bassin d’Arcachon, accompanied by a good white wine. In Saint-Émilion, don’t miss the macaron, a typical sweet that will make you fall in love. And in each village, look for the restaurants that offer traditional dishes, such as duck confit or entrecôte à la bordelaise. If you prefer fish, the Lamproie à la Bordelais, Lamprey à la bordelaise, a traditional dish with a unique flavor. And for dessert, the Canelés, a typical sweet from Bordeaux, with a crispy texture on the outside and soft on the inside.

For sleeping, there are options for all tastes. In Bordeaux, you can stay in luxury hotels with river views or in charming boutique hotels in the historic center, Hôtel de Sèze in the city center is a great option). In Saint-Émilion, Hostellerie de Plaisance is a charming hotel in the heart of the town with views of the vineyards, but there are many rural houses with their own vineyards.
