Best white Grenache in the world
Bodega Sommos produces the best white Grenache in the world, according to the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles
- Sommos Colección Garnacha Blanca 2021 was the only wine from the Somontano PDO to win the Grand Gold Medal in the 2023 edition of the competition.
- Only 87 of the more than 7,500 participating wines have achieved this qualification, four of them from Aragon, among which is the one from Bodega Sommos, the only one of its variety to be awarded.
Sommos Colección Garnacha Blanca 2021 has been awarded the Grand Gold Medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2023, one of the most prestigious competitions in the world of wine, which this year celebrated its 30th edition in the Croatian city of Porec. Only 87 wines out of the more than 7,500 submitted to the competition won this distinction and Sommos was the only one to win in the Garnacha Blanca variety.
This year, the competition brought together a panel of 320 professional tasters of 50 nationalities. Of the wines recognized with the highest award, the Grand Gold Medal, four of them are from Aragon: in addition to Sommos Garnacha Blanca, the only one from the Somontano PDO, there are three single-varietal red Garnacha wines.
As the winery’s winemaker, José Javier Echandi, points out, «it is a great joy, since this is the first vintage we have made of this wine, and a distinction like this rewards the hours of work and affection we have put into it. It was very difficult for us to take the step of launching a single varietal Garnacha Blanca, since, compared to other typical varieties of the Somontano PDO, such as Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer or Sauvignon Blanc, it has a much more discreet aromatic profile and a slightly bitter finish in the mouth. However, I believe that our Sommos Colección Garnacha Blanca shows a great balance between the aromas coming from the variety and those from the barrel aging, while giving us an elegant, pleasant and prolonged sensation in the mouth».
In addition to this award, the winery also won a Gold Medal for Sommos Premium 2018, a wine made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Tempranillo that, after 24 months of aging in new French oak barrels, results in an intense, powerful and flavorful wine.
