Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is a wine produced in the Marlborough region of New Zealand.
The winery and its history
Villa Maria was founded in 1961 with a pioneering spirit and a desire to champion the very best of New Zealand wine. It is the number one New Zealand wine brand in the United Kingdom. In 2001, Villa Maria became the first winery in the world to adopt screwcap closures for 100% of its wines, ensuring that Private Bin reaches your glass as fresh as the day it was bottled.
The region and terroir
Marlborough is New Zealand’s largest wine region and is world-famous for its crisp, fruit-driven Sauvignon Blancs. Private Bin is a blend of fruit from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. The cool climate of the Awatere Valley, influenced by Mount Tapuae-o-uenuku and alpine winds, helps preserve the wine’s natural acidity. Meanwhile, the Wairau Valley enjoys warmer summers, with northwesterly winds that produce grapes with more intense character, featuring ripe citrus and tropical fruit notes.
Aromatic and flavour profile
The 2024 Private Bin smells as it consistently has: blackcurrant, green apple, passion fruit, white pineapple and white pepper, with a saline acidity. It is a well-structured wine, with everything in its place.
On the palate, there is plenty of energy behind the juicy blend of peach, citrus and apple, with notes of lemon verbena and orange blossom, and a hint of ginger on the finish.
The fruit was pressed and left to settle for 48 hours before removing solids from the clear juice prior to fermentation. Neutral and aromatic yeasts were used to enhance intensity, and fermentation took place at 12–14°C to preserve aromas and flavours. After a short period on the lees, the wine was filtered and bottled to capture its vibrancy and freshness.
