Although Pinot Noir is currently one of the most dominant red grape varieties worldwide, it is still not very widespread in Spain. For that reason, we always enjoy bringing you tasting notes of wines like these whenever one comes into our hands. That is the case today, as we present the wine crafted by Bodega SOMMOS: its Colección Pinot Noir 2024, one of the most interesting and uncommon red wines from the Somontano appellation.
Producing Pinot Noir in a Mediterranean climate is far from easy, yet SOMMOS has succeeded in creating a refined, fresh, and highly varietal wine thanks to the cooler microclimate found within its Torresalas estate.
The wine is made from grapes grown in the smallest plot of the vineyard, barely one hectare in size, oriented north-south and located in the coolest and most humid area of the estate, with cover crops and carefully controlled irrigation. All of this helps preserve freshness and aromatic delicacy, something essential for Pinot Noir.
In terms of vinification, fermentation takes place in open-top tanks with gentle pigeage and the use of indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation occurs in concrete vats, followed by six months of ageing in used French oak barrels. The goal is to respect the pure expression of the variety without excessive oak influence, while adding a touch of complexity and elegance and preserving freshness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a bright cherry-red colour with a medium-low intensity, elegant ruby reflections, and a distinctly Burgundian style. Visually, it is a delicate and very clean Pinot Noir.
The nose is very fresh and attractive, packed with fruit aromas such as wild strawberries, raspberry, light blackberry, and red cherry, accompanied by floral violet notes, refreshing menthol hints, and delicate spicy nuances that emerge over time in the glass. The oak is beautifully integrated and never overshadows the fruit, exactly as intended in the winemaking process.
On the palate, it is a light and elegant wine with fine, youthful tannins, very good acidity, and a silky texture, standing out for its fresh and gastronomic profile.
Final Thoughts
Approximate price: Around €20.
Where to buy it: Available through online wine shops or directly from the winery’s website. Production is very limited (only around 5,000 bottles), making it harder to find through other channels.
Why try it? It is a very different style of Spanish red wine. It does not seek power or concentration; instead, it clearly focuses on delicacy, fluidity, and varietal purity. The finish leaves lingering memories of fresh red fruit and aromatic herbs.
This is undoubtedly one of the most interesting Spanish Pinot Noirs available within a relatively accessible price range. It has personality, varietal honesty, and very careful winemaking behind it. It does not try too hard to imitate Burgundy, but it successfully conveys that same sense of elegance, subtlety, and freshness that Pinot Noir lovers are usually searching for.
