D2 by DeLille Cellars is one of the most iconic wines from Washington State and probably one of the most recognized Bordeaux-style blends in the New World. It is produced in the Columbia Valley AVA, a region characterized by wide diurnal temperature variation, low rainfall, and a remarkable diversity of high-quality vineyards.
The name “D2” refers to the D2 road in the Médoc (France), a direct nod to the classic Bordeaux style that inspires the wine.
D2 is a Bordeaux-inspired blend historically dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and occasionally Malbec.
In the 2021 vintage, the approximate blend consists of 58% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot.
It is a wine that combines fruit intensity with aromatic precision and a firm yet polished structure.
On the nose, layers of aromas emerge as the wine opens up, revealing notes of cassis and blackcurrant, ripe plum and black cherry, blackberry and ripe red fruits, alongside floral hints of violet. Barrel aging contributes nuances of cedar and pencil lead (graphite), tobacco and dried leaf, cocoa and dark chocolate, sweet spices, and touches of vanilla. It is unmistakably Bordeaux-inspired in style, yet with the riper and more vibrant fruit profile that is typical of Washington State.
On the palate, D2 fully reveals its identity, showing a medium-to-full body with a silky, enveloping texture, fine yet structured tannins, and excellent freshness, supported by juicy black fruit at the center of the palate. The finish is long, with lingering notes of cocoa, coffee, and fine oak.
To decide
It is a more approachable wine than a great classic Bordeaux, yet more structured and serious than many New World blends. Compared with other Washington wines, it leans more toward elegance than opulence.
