Poiré Domfront Le Bézot “Printanier et Élégant” – Ferme des Grimaux (Famille Pacory) is a natural sparkling pear drink with AOP Domfront status (Normandy, France). It is essentially the equivalent of cider, but made from specific pear varieties used for poiré.
It is produced from 100% Plant de Blanc (a key variety within the appellation), with natural fermentation and bottle carbonation (no added gas), and has an alcohol content of 4% ABV.
It is closer to a light sparkling style such as a pét-nat than to a conventional wine.
It comes from the Poiré Domfront AOP in Normandy, made from traditional pear trees (many of them centuries old). The pears are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, followed by slow, natural fermentation and a second fermentation in the bottle, resulting in fine bubbles.
Tasting note
In the glass, it shows a pale golden yellow color with fine, persistent bubbles.
The nose is very elegant and quite different from wine, with notes of fresh, crisp pear, white flowers, and citrus hints (lemon/grapefruit).
On the palate, it has a very fresh, light attack, with delicate (non-aggressive) bubbles, lively acidity, a slight astringency, a dry, mineral profile, and a very clean, refreshing finish.
Overall impression: ultra-light, elegant, refreshing, and very refined (more so than a typical cider).
To help you decide
Approximate price: Between €8.50 and €15 depending on the market. More expensive than standard cider, but more of a “gourmet” product.
Where to buy: Available in specialty cider shops or French product stores, in wine shops with alternative selections (increasingly common), and in online retailers specializing in Norman or imported products.
Why is it different and interesting?
It’s not wine, but if you’re looking for something different, this is it: very fine natural bubbles, more elegant than many industrial ciders, and very low in alcohol (4%).
