The winery from Alto Aragón thus materializes its support for these historical reenactment days, declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2025.
The Templar Wine launched by Sommos can be enjoyed from May 22 to 24 in the tents of the Medieval Market and at institutional events, in addition to having its own stand.
Sommos’ “Templar wine” will be present at a new edition of the Templar Tribute to James I and Guillem de Mont-rodón. This historical-cultural event reaches its 24th edition, now recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest, and for the second consecutive year features Sommos Reserva as the official wine of the fair.
“We are very grateful to continue collaborating with the Monzón City Council in these historical reenactment days, which are a true reference for the people of Monzón and which we will enjoy this year on May 22, 23, and 24. For us, it is a pleasure to support initiatives like this, which promote local development, help reduce tourism seasonality, and offer an attractive proposal centered on gastronomy, culture, and the history of our province,” said Sommos Marketing Director Diego Mur.
The presentation of the new “Sommos Reserva Templario” bottle took place in the emblematic Sommos Winery building and was attended by the Mayor of Monzón and President of the Provincial Council, Isaac Claver: “Today we present the official wine of the Templar Tribute, a limited-edition reserve from Sommos Winery. With it, we bring together the best of our land—in this case, Somontano wine—with our Templar festival. Last year the winery placed its trust in us, and this year we renew our collaboration after achieving recognition as a Festival of National Tourist Interest; a celebration where we bring together tradition, history, culture, and gastronomy in what will be a very special event.”
The label of the Templar wine, designed for the occasion, includes a poem dedicated to Monzón Templario: “With this wine, Sommos pays tribute to the inhabitants of the town of Monzón, and especially to King James I and Guillem de Mont-rodón, who, through their character and wisdom, helped make the Kingdom of Aragon greater. We toast to them all and to their Templar castle in this Festival declared of National Tourist Interest.”
Sommos wine can be enjoyed in the various tents of the Medieval Market and will also be served at institutional events held during the festival. In addition, attendees will be able to purchase a bottle at the Sommos Winery stand. This special edition will also be available at the winery shop and on its website.
As part of the program of activities and performances, on Saturday the 23rd at 11:15 a.m. and Sunday the 24th at 7:15 p.m., Racún Teatro will perform “Song to the Templar Wine” in the Plaza Mayor. This activity, sponsored by Sommos, features the monk Beremundo and a jester presenting a poetic and humorous narrative, after which bottles will be raffled among attendees.
The Templar Tribute to James I and Guillem de Mont-Rodón is a cultural event held every year to commemorate the stay of James I the Conqueror, future King of Aragon, in the city of Monzón between 1214 and 1217. There, while still a child, he remained under the tutelage of the Order of the Temple and its commander, Guillem de Mont-rodón, who educated the young orphan and guided him through his childhood—something that left a profound mark on his later attitude as a monarch. For years, the municipality of Monzón has commemorated this historical episode by traveling back in time to its medieval splendor in the 13th century.
