The wine from the winery in the province of Huesca has been awarded a Gold Medal at the 40th edition of the Baco Awards, organised by the Spanish Wine Tasters Union (Unión Española de Catadores).

  • It is the first white wine in Sommos’ “Colección” range, produced from grapes grown in the Torresalas vineyard surrounding the winery.

Sommos Colección Gewürztraminer 2025 has been awarded a Gold Medal at the latest edition of the Baco Awards, held on 27 May in Madrid and organised by the Spanish Wine Tasters Union (UEC). Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the competition brings together more than 50 professional tasters to assess wines produced from the most recent vintage, in this case the 2025 harvest.

“The 2025 vintage of Sommos Colección Gewürztraminer embodies the wine we have always wanted to make from this variety. It is highly expressive on the nose, yet unlike many other wines made from Gewürztraminer, it is dry on the palate, with vibrant acidity and a saline finish accompanied by a subtle bitter note. This makes it an exceptionally food-friendly wine while remaining unmistakably true to its varietal character. I honestly believe it is the best Gewürztraminer we have produced to date. It is undoubtedly surprising even those wine lovers who are not usually fans of this grape variety,” says José Javier Echandi, winemaker at Sommos.

Sommos Colección Gewürztraminer

Sommos Colección Gewürztraminer was the first white wine produced by the winery within its “Colección” range, which comprises nine single-varietal wines made from unique vineyards within the DOP Somontano appellation.

The wine is produced from grapes grown in the Torresalas Estate vineyard, a parcel characterised by limestone, gypsum and saline soils formed from alluvial deposits of the ancient terraces of the Cinca River. The vineyard is planted on a north–south orientation, allowing one side of the trellis system, facing east, to develop a more citrus-driven profile with higher acidity, while the west-facing side displays more intense tropical characteristics.

This vineyard is usually among the first to be harvested within the DOP Somontano, with the aim of preserving acidity and maintaining relatively low sugar levels in order to achieve a more gastronomic style. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts.

On the nose, the wine displays aromas of lychee, citrus peel and white flowers. On the palate, it is fresh, flavoursome and persistent, with a dry, saline finish.
