Wine tourism in Portugal: Quinta da Pôpa
Quinta da Pôpa is a relatively young but highly dynamic winery in the Douro Valley. Founded in 2003, it reflects a family dream brought to life and opened to visitors in 2012.

The estate offers an intimate and engaging wine tourism experience, where visitors can follow the entire production process—from vineyard to glass—while enjoying modern facilities and stunning views over the Douro River. Its pet-friendly philosophy further enhances its appeal.

Quinta da Pôpa, located in Tabuaço, is a relatively young but highly dynamic vineyard that has quickly gained recognition for its high-quality wines and innovative approach while respecting traditional Douro viticulture. The estate lies along the scenic banks of the Douro River, providing breathtaking views of terraced vineyards and the surrounding hills.
Historical Background
The estate was acquired in 2003 by the current owners, fulfilling the dream of their grandfather, Francisco Ferreira, locally known as Pôpa. Although a new chapter in the property’s history, the estate honours the rich Douro traditions of vineyard management and wine production.
Vineyards and Terroir
The vineyards of Quinta da Pôpa are carefully planted on the steep terraces typical of the Douro Superior. The estate’s soils vary in composition, including schist and granite, which contribute to the wines’ complexity and structure. In the 1980s, the estate focused on revitalising the Touriga Nacional varietal, almost abandoned in the region at the time due to its low yields and difficulty of cultivation. Today, this varietal is central to the estate’s red wines, producing elegant, intense, and expressive wines that reflect the Douro terroir.
Winemaking Approach
Quinta da Pôpa combines traditional methods with modern technology, ensuring precision in grape selection, fermentation, and aging. The estate produces both reds and whites:
- Reds: Powerful and elegant, with intense aromas, layered flavors, and strong aging potential.
- Whites: Fresh, aromatic, and complex, highlighting the mineral and floral qualities of the Douro terroir.
Since 1999, when the estate released its first wines under the current designation, Quinta da Pôpa has gained both national and international acclaim.
Enotourism Experience
The estate offers visitors a highly engaging and immersive experience:
- Vineyard Tours: Guests can walk through the terraced vineyards, learning about varietals, soil types, and vineyard management.
- Winemaking Experience: Visitors can follow the entire process from grape harvest to fermentation and aging.
- Wine Tastings: Guided tastings of reds and whites, exploring the estate’s signature Touriga Nacional-based wines.
- Modern Facilities & Hospitality: The winery is fully equipped, welcoming visitors with an emphasis on comfort, education, and engagement.
- Pet-Friendly Environment: Quinta da Pôpa allows visitors to enjoy the estate alongside their pets, making it a unique experience for families.
