Niepoort – Quinta de Baixo Vinhas Velhas 2021 (Maria Gomes & Bical)
Niepoort is one of the most prestigious wineries in Portugal, with more than 150 years of family history and six generations dedicated to wine. It is currently led by Dirk Niepoort. Although traditionally famous for its Port wines, the estate embraces a modern approach: minimal intervention, respect for the vineyard, and a strong focus on terroir expression.
The Niepoort Style (key to understanding the wine)
- Less emphasis on oak
- Greater freshness and tension
- Wines that age exceptionally well in bottle
- A Burgundian-inspired philosophy applied to Portugal
This wine comes from Niepoort’s project in Bairrada (Quinta de Baixo), where the estate acquired the property to reinterpret the region:
- Recovery of old vines
- Sustainable/organic farming
- Aiming for finer, fresher, less heavy wines
To fully understand this wine, it is important to note that it comes from centenary vineyards (80–100 years old), rooted in clay-limestone soils that give it a marked mineral profile. Fermentation and ageing take place in large old wooden vats (around 1000L) over several months, and the wine is bottled unfiltered.
Tasting Note: Quinta de Baixo Vinhas Velhas
Appearance
In the glass, it shows a pale yellow colour with slightly golden reflections. Clean, bright, and with a visual density that already suggests structure.
Nose
Very fine, deep, and not at all explosive (very much in the Niepoort style). Notes of citrus (lime, lemon peel), ripe white fruit (pear, quince), herbal and floral hints, touches of dried nuts (almond), and a distinctive chalky mineral background.
With aeration, more complex nuances emerge (light smokiness, an elegant oxidative touch).
It is a nose that is more intellectual than aromatic—very much driven by terroir.
Palate
This is where the wine truly shines.
A very fresh attack (high natural acidity, typical of Bairrada), followed by a tense, vertical palate with great precision. Creamy texture (from fermentation and ageing in large vats), leading to a mineral and slightly saline sensation. The finish is long, serious, with a subtle spicy edge.
It is a wine that combines Atlantic acidity with a Burgundian structure.
Food Pairing
Perfect with:
- Seafood and Atlantic fish
- Salt cod (a staple in Portugal)
- Japanese cuisine (thanks to its salinity and acidity)
- Rich or fatty dishes (balances them beautifully)
Buying Guide
Approximate price:
Between €30 and €45 in Spain and Portugal. In international markets, it may reach €40–50.
👉 Excellent value for money considering its quality.
Where to buy:
- Specialist wine shops (wine merchants)
- Online wine platforms
- Importers of Portuguese wines or gourmet stores
It is not typically found in supermarkets, which already says a lot about its positioning.
Why it’s worth trying
- One of the finest white wines from Bairrada
- Made from lesser-known indigenous varieties (Maria Gomes & Bical)
- A very pure expression of limestone terroir
- A serious, food-friendly wine with ageing potential
- A perfect example of the new wave of Portuguese winemaking
Overall, this is not a simple or immediately expressive white. It is a wine for those seeking depth, tension, and a strong sense of origin.
