Gruñón 2020 Garnacha & Syrah by Locos por el Vino

Gruñón 2020 Garnacha & Syrah by Locos por el Vino is a powerful red wine (15.5% ABV), modern in style and full of personality. It is not complex in the classical sense, but it is highly expressive and delivers a strong impact.

The wine comes from the DO Campo de Borja (Aragon), a region well known for its intense Garnacha wines. It is a blend made from 50% Garnacha and 50% Syrah.

This project is linked to Bodegas Alto Moncayo, with winemakers such as Chris Ringland involved. The grapes come from Garnacha vineyards on the slopes of Moncayo and Syrah grown on terraces in the Huecha Valley.

In terms of winemaking, both varieties are vinified separately in stainless steel (with no oak influence). The aim is to produce a wine that is modern, straightforward, and very fruit-driven, rather than classical in style.

Tasting Notes

Visually, it shows a deep purple color in the glass, with high intensity (a concentrated wine).

On the nose, it is very powerful and appealing, with ripe black fruit aromas (blackberry, plum, raisin), along with hints of licorice and sweet spices.

On the palate, it has a strong attack and great volume, with sweet, enveloping tannins, a creamy texture, and a long, silky finish.

Overall, it is an intense, fleshy, and very “pleasurable” wine, with that modern profile that is easy to enjoy.

To Consider

Approximate price: Between €15 and €18 (commonly found online), although some shops may price it up to €20–22. It is a mid-range wine with good value for money.

Where to buy: Mainly available through online wine retailers.

Why is it interesting? Because it can be described as a “Spanish Rhône-style” wine, with a Garnacha–Syrah blend reminiscent of Rhône wines, but with greater fruit intensity and power.
