Huerta de Albalá: the elevation-driven revolution of Cádiz wine

In the heart of Andalusia, at the foot of the Sierra de Grazalema and very close to Arcos de la Frontera, lies Huerta de Albalá, one of the most ambitious and acclaimed wineries in southern Spain. Founded with the vision of producing high-end wines in the warmest corner of Europe, the estate has succeeded in placing Cádiz on the map of great Spanish red wines.

History and origins

The winery was founded in the early 2000s by entrepreneur Vicente Taberner, who, after years of international experience in the wine sector, decided to develop his own project in Andalusia.

His goal was clear: to prove that southern Spain could produce red wines of great quality, structure, and aging potential, traditionally associated with cooler regions.

From the beginning, the project was conceived as a boutique winery with a philosophy based on:

  • Estate-owned vineyards
  • Strict yield control
  • Rigorous grape selection
  • Aging in French and American oak barrels

Today, Huerta de Albalá is considered one of the most influential wineries in the new generation of I.G.P. Vino de la Tierra de Cádiz wines.

Location: a vineyard between mountains and the Atlantic

The estate is located in a privileged setting:

  • Average altitude of around 150 meters
  • Moderate Atlantic influence
  • Proximity to the Sierra de Grazalema
  • Limestone and clay soils

This environment allows for slow and balanced grape ripening, a key factor in the freshness and complexity of its wines.

Winemaking philosophy

The winery mainly works with international varieties adapted to Cádiz’s climate:

  • Syrah (principal variety)
  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Tintilla de Rota (native variety)

The wines are produced through:

  • Manual harvesting
  • Double grape selection
  • Fermentation in oak vats
  • Long aging in French oak barrels

The result is powerful, structured wines with a strong southern identity.

WINE TASTING

Taberner Nº1 2016

The flagship and most exclusive wine of the estate.

In appearance, it shows a deep cherry-red color, high concentration, almost opaque, with a slightly evolved rim.

On the nose, it is highly complex and profound, with a strong presence of ripe black fruit (cassis, plum), alongside hints of licorice and carob. It is complemented by balsamic and Mediterranean scrubland notes, with marked aromas of coffee, tobacco, and leather, and an elegant mineral background.

On the palate, it is powerful and enveloping, with firm yet silky tannins. It has a broad, highly persistent structure and a long finish with notes of cocoa and fine oak.

A serious, age-worthy wine, almost “collectible,” with extended aging in French oak.

Taberner Selección Especial 2019

A more refined and precise interpretation of the Taberner style.

Visually, it shows a medium-intensity cherry-red color with mahogany reflections.

On the nose, it offers abundant black fruit (blackberry, currant), with oak-derived notes of vanilla and coconut, alongside pine, balsamic hints, anise, sweet spices, and menthol nuances.

On the palate, it is elegant and well-balanced from the attack. The tannins are present but more polished than in Taberner Nº1, with good freshness and medium-high structure. The finish is spicy and persistent.

A more approachable wine within the premium range, yet still highly complex aromatically.

Huerta de Albalá stands today as one of the most solid projects in modern Andalusian wine:

  • High-end red wines from southern Spain
  • Highly technical and precise vineyard and cellar management
  • Proven aging potential
  • A clear identity: power, elegance, and Cádiz character

Between the extreme character of Taberner Nº1 and the finesse of Selección Especial, the winery demonstrates that Cádiz is not only about fresh Atlantic wines, but also about structure, depth, and serious age-worthy reds.
