The Great Wine Routes of the World (XV): Napa Valley and Sonoma – Glamour, History and Cabernet
The Valley That Humiliated France in 1976
The Napa Valley wine industry earned its global reputation in a single stroke. At the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris, Napa Valley wines outperformed their French counterparts in a blind tasting judged by French wine experts. Since that landmark event, the region has maintained an outstanding international reputation and has become one of the world’s most prestigious wine destinations.
Today, California is home to more than 140 AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) and over 4,000 wineries, ranging from boutique family estates to internationally renowned producers. Napa has become synonymous with premium wines, striking architecture and gourmet experiences. Although it accounts for only around 4% of California’s total wine production, it generates a disproportionately large share of the industry’s prestige and economic value.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the undisputed king of Napa. Direct-to-consumer winery sales account for approximately 61% of Napa Valley wine sales, a figure virtually unmatched anywhere else in the world. The valley’s wineries rely heavily on wine tourism to generate revenue, making them absolute masters of wine hospitality.
To the west lies Sonoma, almost twice the size of Napa and home to even more wineries, yet noticeably less crowded by tourists. Many locals proudly say that here, “you can still talk to the winemakers”.

Essential Wineries
Opus One in Oakville is arguably the valley’s most famous winery. Founded in 1978 as a partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Mouton Rothschild, a visit combines spectacular architecture, twentieth-century wine history and one of California’s most celebrated Cabernet-Merlot blends.
Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is the winery that made history at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, where its S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon defeated some of Bordeaux’s greatest châteaux. Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga offers an entirely different experience: a winery built as an authentic medieval Tuscan castle, complete with tastings in stone chambers that evoke the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
Sterling Vineyards, also in Calistoga, provides an experience few wineries in the world can match. Visitors travel by aerial tramway to a hilltop tasting room offering panoramic views across the valley that alone justify the price of admission. In Sonoma, Jordan Winery produces some of California’s most elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines and offers tours that include gourmet lunches served among the vineyards.

Landmarks and Heritage
Napa and Sonoma lie just 45 minutes from San Francisco, adding one of the world’s most beautiful cities as the perfect base for a wine journey. The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, the Haight-Ashbury district and the Ferry Building Marketplace are essential stops.
Within Sonoma itself, Jack London State Historic Park preserves the ranch where the author of White Fang and The Call of the Wild once lived, surrounded by vineyards and redwood forests. The Northern California Redwoods—the tallest trees on Earth—are little more than an hour away.

Gastronomy
Napa Valley combines world-class wines with exceptional gastronomy. Local cheeses, artisan olive oils and chocolate tastings form an integral part of the visitor experience.
The French Laundry in Yountville, created by chef Thomas Keller, is the most acclaimed restaurant in North America and represents the ultimate gastronomic experience on the West Coast. With three Michelin stars and waiting lists that often stretch for months, it has become a culinary destination in its own right.
PRESS in St Helena, together with Bottega and Bouchon, complete a dining scene capable of competing with any great gastronomic capital in the world.
Another unique experience is the Napa Valley Wine Train, a beautifully restored historic train that travels the length of the valley while guests enjoy gourmet menus prepared by specialist chefs, with vineyard landscapes providing a constantly changing backdrop throughout the journey.
