12 Spanish Sauvignon Blancs awarded in the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon
12 Spanish Sauvignon Blancs wines awarded at the Concours Mondial du Sauvingnon held recently in South Africa.
In this edition of the Concours Mondial du Sauvingnon 2023, 1,210 wines from all over the world were presented and evaluated by 50 international tasters who awarded silver and gold medals to wines from 20 producing countries. For the first time in its history, the competition was held outside Europe, in Franschhoek (South Africa).
Of the 12 medals for Spanish wines, 4 were gold. Half of the Spanish Sauvignon Blancs with medals were produced under the Rueda appellation. But other producing areas are also represented in the list of winners, such as Catalonia, Aragon, Navarra and La Mancha.
The best Sauvignon of the competition comes from Steiermark, the Denis Dubourdieu Trophy is awarded to the Sauvignon Blanc Sieme Eichberg from the Adam-Lieleg winery. With no less than 85 medals, 45 gold and 40 silver, Austria confirms the high quality of its production in the world of Sauvignon Blanc.
Despite a difficult 2022 vintage, the Loire won 77 medals (28 gold, 49 silver), a good reward for the region’s producers, who were not spared by the weather conditions. France also won the International Trophy for the best blend for a Gascon wine, the Saint-Lannes Sauvignon-Chardonnay from Duffour Père & Fils.
Sauvignon Blanc is a varietal that has its epicentre in New Zealand but is becoming more and more widespread throughout the wine world. Greats wines.
