During our recent visit to ProWein, we were able to have a very interesting conversation with the SOMMOS winery team, where Diego Mur, its Marketing Manager, presented us the objectives of this Somontano winery for the year 2023.

‘We are already present in more than 30 countries. Our idea is to strengthen and grow in the international markets where we are present and enter new ones, without losing sight, of course, of the national market’.

Events such as ProWein, the largest international wine fair held annually in the German city of Düsseldorf, is, without a doubt, a showcase for entering new markets at an international level.

‘We have noticed that there have been more visitors to the stand than in previous editions. People from different countries have come to taste the different wines we make. In fact, we have already established some potential business contacts in new markets’.

The truth is that Bodega SOMMOS makes wines with many varietals that tend to attract attention in foreign markets because, although they are not very common in Spain (although they are on the increase), they are more common in other countries. Single varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah among the reds, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer among the whites, are examples of some of their wines that are not so common in our country but are present in many countries around the world, which is why they are usually very well accepted in many countries.

This is helped a lot by the fact that their wines are receiving recognition in international competitions, which also helps to be a very good gateway into really competitive and complex markets.

‘We have recently received the Gold Medal at the Mundus Vini in its spring tasting for our Reserva 2018 wine. A great opportunity to expand our offer and image in Central European markets’.

In this edition of ProWein 2023 they tell us that two of the wines that have surprised us the most, on the one hand, the wine Sommos Sauvignon Blanc, a single varietal from the vineyards of Güel, almost 1,000 metres above sea level, surprising for its freshness, for its tense acidity and for its expressive and elegant aromatic palette. Most of the attendees praised the profile of this wine, and were surprised to find a Sauvignon Blanc of these characteristics in Spain.

On the other hand, the wine Alquez de Sommos, a wine from the Sommos Garnacha winery, located in Murero (Zaragoza). It is a structured but fresh and contemporary Garnacha, which has attracted attention for its finesse and elegance, arousing the interest of different markets where Garnacha is a rising value.

But this international expansion goes hand in hand with the expansion of its presence in the domestic market, undoubtedly helped by its wine tourism activities, in which visitors can enjoy its winery with a unique architecture of its building, inspired by the silhouette of the emblematic Cotiella. Not in vain has it been chosen by the prestigious Anglo-Saxon wine publication The Drinks Business as one of the «10 architectural wonders of the wine world», but not only for its beauty, but also for its functionality.

Not only can we enjoy a visit to this winery with great quality wines that perfectly show the rigorous climate and the typical terroir of Somontano, but the range of wine tourism experiences they offer is also a great incentive.

In 2023 we would like to repeat the successes of 2022, such as the recognition of being the Winery of the Year chosen by the Aragonese Academy of Gastronomy, a recognition that undoubtedly shows us the path we should follow’.
