Banquet: Wine selection for King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla

During the state banquet at Bellevue Palace in Berlin, the British King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla and guests were served wines from four of 13 individual German wine-growing regions.

The corresponding dishes: a four-course menu that was initially guarded like a state secret. On Wednesday evening, 29th March 2023, the menu was then announced:

The approximately 130 guests were first served pickled carp and Erfurt watercress, then Heck beef broth, pasture chicken and tree fungus, and finally prunes, East Frisian black tea and shortbread.

Riesling, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Winzersekt for the royal couple

The wine pairing consisted of a 2003 Riesling Spätlese dry from Hochheimer Kirchenstück at Rheingau from winery Domdechant Werner. Furthermore a 2013 Pinot Noir from Oppenheimer Kreuz from winery Kühling-Gillot at Bodenheim in Rheinhessen.  For dessert, a 2019 liqueur wine „Ahr 7“ from VDP Ahr was served. Of course, there was also a non-alcoholic alternative and Winzersekt. These were a 2017 Pinot brut from winery Mohr from Lorch and a 2015 «Geheimrat J“ Sekt from Sekthaus Wegeler from Oestrich at the Rheingau as well as a 2015 Pinot brut from winery Stigler from Ihringen in Baden.

«The British King Charles III is committed to expanding cooperation with Germany,» writes the Rheinische Post in Bonn. The relations between the two countries are also extremely important to him. «I am more convinced than ever of their lasting value for all of us,» he said, according to the daily newspaper Rheinische Post on Wednesday evening in his after-dinner speech at the state banquet in Bellevue Palace in Berlin. «I can only assure you that I will do everything I can to further strengthen our relationship during my time as King.»
