2021 Seulalia Mencía 

We already brought you the tasting of several wines from this project, Bodegas y Viñedos Anselmo Álvarez last year, so I wanted to try and bring you the tasting of the new vintages that we have been able to taste. And I start with this Seulalia Mencia 2021.

Single varietal Mencía made under the D.O. Bierzo from old vineyards with manual harvest and reduced intervention in the vineyard (biodynamic viticulture, without herbicides or systemic, something characteristic of this project) and a manual work of the vineyard. It preserves the traditional winemaking style with initial fermentation in concrete tanks and finishing in stainless steel tanks.

It has a 13.5% vol., one degree less than the previous vintage, which helps to leave a greater freshness and vibrant fruit.

In view it presents a cherry-red cherry color, with slightly less intensity than the last vintage, with a medium layer, bright and clean. Purple reflections in the movement of the glass. Good tear that stains the glass very well.

Medium to high intensity on the nose, with lots of fruit as we approach the glass. Red fruit, some slightly ripe touch, floral contribution to violets, some slight herbaceous background and minerality. Soft balsamic notes.

Fresh entry on the palate, with lots of fruit. Very good acidity that helps to leave a vibrant passage through the palate, with a medium volume. Very balanced palate, with a lower alcohol balance than the previous vintage. Tannins present, very good persistence and a fairly long finish.

I found it to be more elegant than the previous vintage, losing power but gaining in style and finesse.

A wine this Seulalia 2021 with the winery’s own style but with a different tasting, elegant and fresh at the same time, with lots of fruit that, after its tasting, repeats its rating with respect to the 2020 vintage, with a rating of Very Good, reaching 91+ points.
