1987 Viña Tondonia Reserva

1987 Viña Tondonia Reserva

One of those jewels that we can enjoy on occasions, such as this wine, 1987 Viña Tondonia Reserva, produced by Bodega R. López de Heredia (Viña Tondonia) under the protection of the DOCa Rioja.

With the excellent ageing it has had, to be able to enjoy a wine like this, with almost 40 years in bottle, made with a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo.

A wine that needs to be decanted and opened, because the time it has been in bottle makes this necessary.

In view we find a wine that presents a cherry color, medium intensity, medium layer, with some precipitate, which makes it to be decanted, as we mentioned before. Reflections in movement of brick-red color.

The nose presents a very good intensity, not very high, but still retains very well the presence of fruit. Logically the tertiaries appear clearly, very well combined with hints of ripe fruit, liquorice. Spicy, light toasted, leather, smoke, tobacco. Really complex.

Slightly dry attack, with a very good acidity that has helped it to reach this tasting with a great structure. Very ripe fruit, contributions from aging and time in bottle, with toasty, spicy notes. A passage through the palate with medium volume, light step, with very good persistence even. Medium finish.

A spectacular wine for a 1987 vintage. A jewel that is well worth enjoying with calm and delighting in the passage of time in an excellent wine such as this Viña Tondonia Reserva 1987. A wine that never disappoints and that I always recommend you to enjoy, regardless of the vintage you have in front of you.

Logically, with the limitations of such an old vintage, it is a wine that, after tasting, deserves an Excellent rating.
