Bordeaux Médoc 1855 Wine Route
Under the name Bordeaux Médoc 1855 Wine Route, we find one of the various wine routes that Bordeaux offers to the wine tourist.
It takes this name from the year in which, at the request of Napoleon III, this classification of Bordeaux wines was established, officially recognising 86 estates and dividing them into five categories (First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Growth). These are located in the Médoc, Sauternes and Barsac, with one of them (Château Haut-Brion) in Graves.
This classification has remained unchanged since 1855, with one exception in 1973, when Baron Philippe de Rothschild succeeded in promoting Château Mouton Rothschild from Second Growth to the exclusive group of First Growths.
