1864 Castillo de Olite Reserva 2016
1864 Castillo de Olite Reserva 2016 is a wine produced by Bodegas Manzanos Campanas under the D.O. Navarre. A wine that is made with a coupage mainly Grenache with a contribution of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Aged 24 months in French and American oak barrels (50%-50%) of 225L. Later it rests in the bottle rack, refining itself until it reaches the glass of the lovers of good wine.
A complex, deep wine that deserves a leisurely tasting to be able to appreciate the freshness and passage through the mouth of the Garnacha (55%), with the elegant and fresh contribution of the Tempranillo (35%) and the body and volume that it gives the Cabernet (10%). Also, being a reserve, it needs to open up to show the real potential.
Grapes from old vineyards between 500 and 600 meters above sea level are the secret for it´s characteristics taste. Powerful, fresh and character. Very good combination of Grenache to give freshness to a reserve wine.
At first sight, in a still glass, a fairly intense cherry-colored wine is perceived, with garnet reflections, a medium layer, very bright and clean. Good and fluid tears.
On the nose it presents a medium intensity, pulling to high, with a lot of openness of aromas as soon as it is uncorcked. There is a great presence of tertiaries, the result of a long and careful aging process, but some of them, as they are multi-purpose barrels, do not leave much of the oaky notes of the new barrel, which allows Garnacha varietal aromas of red fruit to appear, touches of Ripe fruit, as well as contributions from Tempranillo and Cabernet, especially when the glass is aerated and the tertiaries appear more intense: soft wood, light toasted, somewhat herbaceous contributions, cocoa, vanilla, …. really complex and interesting with a slight background minerality. Very well balanced set without a doubt, with good tuning.
The mouthfeel is quite fresh, tasty, round on the palate, with a good structure that allows it to grow in the bottle, speaking of the fact that we are facing a 2016, with the skeleton that the Cabernet gives it to endure in the bottle. Fruit, good acidity, medium volume, horizontal step, very good persistence and a fairly long finish. A wine that, given its preparation, coupage and profile, must be tasted calmly and, above all, watched it evolve in the glass. I like it a lot as a gastronomic wine.
After its tasting, it is a wine that deserves the rating of Excellent, reaching a score of 93 points.
